Title:Math Instructor

Position Title: Math Instructor (some flexibility is course assignment is possible, but prefer the ability to teach the following: Algebra 2 Honors, Geometry/Geometry Honors, Probability and Statistics; average class size is less than 12).

Minimum Qualifications:

Each instructor is required to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major or twenty-four semester credit hours in the subject area corresponding to the majority of his/her teaching load.  
  • Eligible for provisional or professional licensure in Virginia.  Instructors may be hired under the local licensure law for Virginia teacher endorsements.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current professional licensure in Virginia.  

  • At least twelve semester credit hours in professional education courses as defined accreditation guidelines or the equivalent in experience in teaching in an accredited school.

  • Graduate degree in education or related Content area (i.e., eligible for adjunct faculty credentials at a 2-year or 4-year college).

  • A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in an accredited school.

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in independent boarding and/or single-sex educational institutions.


Each instructor will teach a maximum of five classes as assigned by the Academic Dean.  Instruction in the classroom will be commensurate with the school’s stated philosophy, objectives and purposes.
  1. Each instructor will serve as an advisor to specific cadets assigned by the Director of Guidance.   In this capacity, the instructor will provide the student with assistance in dealing with academic and academy life and serve as a liaison with the student’s parents.

  2. Each instructor will coach or sponsor at least one activity.  The Chief of Staff in conjunction with the Athletic Director will assign these.  Additionally, instructors will be required, based upon rosters maintained by the Student Activities Director to chaperone two events each semester.

  3. Each instructor is responsible for classroom management for assigned classes and strive to maintain consistency across the faculty in knowing and supporting the Academy’s mission, philosophy, and standards both in and out of the classroom.  Faculty members are expected to be role models for Cadets in our focus on development of the whole person academically, spiritually, physically with a focus on development of character in every aspect of the Cadet Experience at Hargrave. The faculty is expected to be cognizant of all rules and regulations that govern the corps and the faculty.

  4. Each instructor will serve as a study hall monitor.  This is a two-hour afternoon duty. Study Hall monitors will actively circulate in the classroom to ensure students are on task and provide help as appropriate.

  5. Each instructor must participate in professional development activities as necessary to obtain and/or maintain licensure under the State of Virginia Department of Education.

  6. Instructors may be assigned other duties as deemed necessary for the efficient operation of Hargrave Military Academy as determined by the administration of the school.

Supervision, Performance Evaluation, Employment Contract:

  • All instructors report to the Academic Dean through their Department Chair.

  • Annual performance evaluations are performed by the faculty member’s Department Chair and reviewed by the Academic Dean

  • All instructors are given one-year contracts, renewable annually depending on the needs of the Academy
